After the past couple games of pretty much winning every single game during the first 45 minutes, we were on fire! Beating Lyon, Espanyol and Malaga 4-0 while beating Villarreal 3-0, things were going well.
With Jose Mourinho deciding to rest a couple players for the midweek game against Lyon, we started with Fabio Coentrao, Lassana Diarra and Mesut Ozil instead of Marcelo, Sami Khedira and Kaka
Today a difficult game awaited us at San Sebastian and, in my opinion, it was much harder that initially expected. Gonzalo Higuain was able to break the deadlock after only 9 minutes after a great pass from Fabio Coentrao. Things were looking great from the Whites while we kept getting chances but nothing happened.
The 15 minute half-time break changed everything. We came back onto the pitch and tried hard but the players simply looked exhausted. As time went on, Mourinho decided to make some very key changes and took off Ozil, who had a poor game, for Kaka. Then took off Diarra for Khedira and also, towards the end, put Karim Benzema to take Higuain's place.
I'm glad we won that game since it was a very important game but it was hard to watch and certainly hard for the players. We always knew that a trip to San Sebastian is very difficult and the game showed just how complicated things could really be. We came out as deserved winners and can now put this game behind us.
Alvaro Arbeloa said it correctly "It is important for us to know how to suffer ... There were four changes to the starting XI an it was not noticeable. We have a very complete squad."
